Sent out of class for coming late, students vandalise bus

The following day, on December 5, we sent away many students who had reported late for classes. Nearly 700 students went to the college ground and gathered. During the break at 10.15 am, their classmates went outside too. College officials said classes are held in two sessions on the campus and the timing for students from Class 9 to 12 is from 7.30 am till 12. Ghaziabad: The students of a government inter college went on a rampage on Meerut Road on Thursday allegedly after they were turned out of classes for having arrived late in the morning assembly. The incident took place outside the campus of KN Modi Science & Commerce College in Modinagar, after which the students also vandalised a bus belonging to UP Roadways.The ruckus was created by a group of students who had arrived late for assembly session which commences daily at 7.30 am. College officials said classes are held in two sessions on the campus and the timing for students from Class 9 to 12 is from 7.30 am till 12. 40 pm.Police said unrest has been reported from the area for the past two days. According to college officials, the unrest began on December 4 after teachers were marked by the management for turning up late for the assembly. “All teachers skipped work on December 4 and did not go to their classes. The following day, on December 5, we sent away many students who had reported late for classes. Nearly 700 students went to the college ground and gathered. Anticipating violence, we called police who pacified the agitating students. We repeated the punishment with students who had arrived late on Thursday. During the break at 10.15 am, their classmates went outside too. It was at this point of time that there was a huge commotion outside the campus gate. We took in most of the students who had not been allowed inside for classes thereafter. Many of them, however, fled from the road where they had been creating a ruckus,” college vice-principal T P Singh told TOI.A PCR van that was stationed nearby rushed to the spot and pacified the angry mob. Eyewitnesses have told police that the students resorted to stone-pelting and vandalized several vehicles. However, police denied the allegations. “The students vandalized only one vehicle which was a UP Roadways bus. Its windshield was smashed. Police reached the spot before the situation went out of control. The road is mostly congested with vehicles during normal days too. Traffic was held up for a few minutes owing to the violence,” SP (rural) Arvind Maurya told TOI.An FIR has been registered against a dozen unidentified persons in Modinagar police station on a complaint by the Roadways’ bus driver.
