Tree-felling OK’d, residents step in, stop it

Noida: Residents of Sector 137 stopped workers of the Noida Authority from cutting down two neem and a sheesham tree that are obstructing traffic. However, four neem trees had already been felled by the time the residents raised the objection.The workers had permission from the forest department to cut seven trees in total. We registered a complaint and saved some of the trees,” said Nidhi Bhatnagar, a resident of Paramount Floraville. “Permission for cutting full grown trees should be given with caution,” said Vikrant Tongad, a city-based environmentalist.In response to the complaints by the residents, district forest officer PK Srivastav said: “We received a request from the Noida Authority for seven trees to be cut as they were obstructing traffic. This was a valid reason, so we granted them the permission.”
