“Villages like Harola have been most challenging as people dump solid waste in packets into these drains while on their way to work. Noida: The RWA federation of Noida has urged Authority CEO Alok Tandon to get the city drains cleaned.“Open drains are spread across the city that not only pose a threat to children and pedestrians but are also a cause of health concern. This is an annual exercise, but we’ve not been able to contain the waste. Despite many sanitation awareness drives, we expect this problem to come down once the door-to-door segregated waste collection and disposal programme is in place from February this year,” said the OSD, adding that more viable results though would be visible only after a year of implementing the municipal solid waste disposal programme. “People have suffered from breathing related issues like asthma and others.

Noida: The RWA federation of Noida has urged Authority CEO Alok Tandon to get the city drains cleaned.“Open drains are spread across the city that not only pose a threat to children and pedestrians but are also a cause of health concern. Residents have complained several times of the hazardous gases emanating from drains that have even damaged the compressors of electronic equipments kept in their homes,” said N P Singh, president of Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations (FONRWA).Residents, especially women, children and senior citizens, have been complaining of breathing problems too. “People have suffered from breathing related issues like asthma and others. There is also a constant threat of spreading of malaria and other water-borne diseases,” added Singh.Even though the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned covering of drains and instead directed their requisite cleaning, open drains near sectors 19, 34, Harola market and the one near Brahmaputra market have remained a challenge due to regular dumping of waste.“We’ve given a Rs 6 crore tender for the cleaning of drains to be completed before monsoon this year. This is an annual exercise, but we’ve not been able to contain the waste. The foul smell is primarily due to the sewer waste dumped into these drains as well as garbage from local markets,” said Rajesh Kumar Singh, OSD at Noida Authority. The official added that while the Authority is cleaning the Harola drain, which is most dirty, once every 10 days, the solution to the problem is door-to-door segregated waste collection and disposal. “Villages like Harola have been most challenging as people dump solid waste in packets into these drains while on their way to work. Despite many sanitation awareness drives, we expect this problem to come down once the door-to-door segregated waste collection and disposal programme is in place from February this year,” said the OSD, adding that more viable results though would be visible only after a year of implementing the municipal solid waste disposal programme.
