Student fails to show FIR against ‘fake’ Pulwama post, suspended

GREATER NOIDA: A Kashmiri student of IIMT college in Greater Noida , who has been accused of putting up a Facebook post that appeared to justify the Pulwama attack, has been suspended by the institute after he failed to produce a copy of the FIR in which he claimed that the social media post was fake.The Facebook post had been uploaded on Friday from an account created under the name of “Eshfaq Khawaja”. The personal information section of the account described “Khawaja” as an MBA student at IIMT group of colleges and a former student of Government College in Kashmir’s Baramulla. IIMT, though, has an MBA student by the name Ishfaq Khoja, who is from Kupwara. He has claimed the Facebook post had been uploaded with an intention to malign him and has lodged an FIR at Kralpora police station.The post not only created a flutter on social media, but also on the streets as students took out a march.In a statement issued on Sunday, the IIMT management said Ishfaq had been directed to lodge the FIR since he is in Kupwara at the moment and share a copy with the institute. “You have failed to submit a copy of the FIR in support of your statement. In view of the afore-said, the above is an anti-national act, is serious and gross misconduct, which is intolerable by IIMT group of colleges, therefore you are being suspended from the college with immediate effect (ie 16-2-2019) till further order,” reads the order.The college has constituted a four-member committee led by the deputy chief proctor. It has directed Ishfaq to appear before it within seven days and provide “supportive evidence before HOD MBA”. Sanjay Pachauri, chief proctor of IIMT college, said the student had repeatedly claimed before the authorities that the account through which the post had been uploaded was fake. “We spoke to him though Facebook and over the phone multiple times. He has been given seven days. In case, he fails to appear personally, he can appear before the committee via Skype,” he said.Reminded that Internet services had been suspended in Jammu and Kashmir area after the Pulwama attack, he said the seven-day time had been given keeping the situation in mind.The college has also written to the Gautam Budh Nagar SSP, seeking a strict action against the student. “This anti-national activity is utmost serious in nature and pertains to national security. You are requested to investigate the matter and bring forth the culprit. IIMT desires that strict and exemplary action should be taken against the culprit,” reads the letter to SSP Vaibhav Krishna.Police, however, have decided to tread cautiously. Krishna said the student could also be a victim of cyber-crime and his claim that the account is fake needed to be investigated. “He has lodged a complaint at a police station (at Kralpora) and we are in touch with the cops there,” he said.
