Auto driver, aide held for robbing a law student

Ghaziabad: Police have made the first arrests since a series of attacks on passengers inside moving auto-rickshaws along NH-9 in the past one week. On Saturday, the driver of an auto and his helper were arrested for allegedly robbing an LLB student on the night of March 13.The cops are, however, clueless about the gangs that molested and robbed a DU student inside a moving auto on March 12 and robbed a 30-year-old dentist a few days earlier on March 9 in the same manner.In all the three recent robberies, the victims had boarded autos near Indirapuram and were robbed along the NH-9.The arrested auto driver and his helper have been identified as Wasim (21) and Danish (19), respectively.On March 13, they had allegedly robbed Pramod, an LLB student, who was returning home to Dasna from a Sector 63 BPO where he does a part-time job. A country-made pistol and a knife have been recovered from them.Circle officer Dharmendra Chauhan said police had increased patrolling along the highway following the recent spate of robberies. Wasim and Danish were picked up during a checking drive in Vijay Nagar on Saturday. One passenger was in the back seat and two persons, including the driver, were in front. The auto was taken through a dark stretch near the carbon factory in Vijay Nagar and I was robbed of my mobile phone and Rs 12,000 that I was carrying. They also took away my ATM card and forced me to disclose the PIN. When I told them there was no money in my account, they beat me up and dumped me,” the student said. The police are, however, hopeful of arresting the other gangs that had attacked the DU student and the dentist.
