When contacted, he said, “I am still the alliance candidate and has no knowledge about Bansal’s candidature. In fact, he was the BSP MLA from Ghaziabad from 2012 to 2017. I am from BSP, but the seat was given to the SP. But now the SP-BSP alliance is in place and given the opportunity, I would work towards ensuring its victory in Ghaziabad.”Three-time former MLA Munni’s name was announced the SP-BSP alliance candidate from Ghaziabad Lok Sabha constituency on March 15. If he has been given the ticket, ask him to show the approval.”

Ghaziabad: There is strong speculation that former BSP MLA Suresh Bansal will replace Surendra Kumar Munni as the SP-BSP alliance candidate from Ghaziabad.Bansal, if selected, will contest on Samajawadi Party symbol, he said, adding he had got permission from BSP chief Mayawati for doing so. The announcement of Congress candidate Dolly Sharma has tilted the situation in Bansal’s favour, according to party insiders.Being Brahmins, both Sharma and Munni could have cut into their each other’s vote shares, sources said.Bansal, on the other hand, is from the Vaishya community and has a good hold in the business community. In fact, he was the BSP MLA from Ghaziabad from 2012 to 2017. He lost his seat in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly election to Atul Garg of BJP.However, Bansal will have to take the membership of SP before filing his nomination papers. Meanwhile, he has started collecting no-objection certificates from the various departments and preparing the affidavits related to his income, given the paucity of time. There are only two days — March 22 and 25 — left for filing the nominations for the first phase of the general election.Sources said the announcement could be made any time now. Bansal had been lobbying for the ticket for some time now and even met SP chief Akhilesh Yadav few days back in Lucknow, they added. When contacted, Bansal said, “I have a clean image, there is no criminal case against me. As an MLA, I had worked a lot for the people of Ghaziabad. He had joined the SP after leaving Congress in 2017, and has currently been serving as the party’s district president.Since the start of the poll season, Munni was believed to be the frontrunner for the LS candidacy from Ghaziabad. When contacted, he said, “I am still the alliance candidate and has no knowledge about Bansal’s candidature. If he has been given the ticket, ask him to show the approval.”
