Showers leave Noida battling with outages for 8 hrs, flood Gzb roads

NOIDA: Heavy rain and gusty winds led to power cuts for around 7-8 hours in different parts of the city on Saturday. In some areas, residents alleged there was no power from 1pm to 8pm.According to data sourced from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded 25.5mm rain till 5.30pm on Saturday. Neighbouring Ghaziabad was quite dry — registering just 2.5mm.The showers helped keep the temperatures in check. While the mercury in Noida ranged from 26.9 to 32.4 degrees, that in Ghaziabad was between 26.7 and 33.1 degrees.Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Sector 51, had no power at his house since 1pm. We had to switch to inverters. Later in the afternoon, the supply resumed for an hour or so and there was an outage again. Such fluctuation in voltage is also affecting electronic equipment and damaging them. How long will residents continue to face such long power cuts after a light spell? The power department must strengthen its infrastructure to provide uninterrupted supply in sectors, he added.At his house in Sector 41, Surojit Gupta was in the dark for almost seven hours. What option do we have but to depend on inverters? Those who dont have inverters were in the dark for so long. No power also means basic amenities will be affected. There was no water at home as motors couldnt be switched on, he added.In most places, outages were reported around afternoon. Brajesh Sharma, a resident of Antriksh Golf View 2 in Sector 78, was also among those who battled power cuts. The AOA has gensets and it automatically switches on in case of an outage. But we have to pay through our pockets for this. How is this feasible, he added.At Jitendra Kumars society, Mahagun Moderne in Sector 78, no lifts were working even though gensets were switched on.A power department official said supply was switched off because of safety reasons during rain. Rajeev Mohan, chief engineer at Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), did not respond to calls and messages for a comment.In Noida, trees and branches fell at different places on the expressway, which slowed down traffic movement. Motorists faced difficulties due to large potholes, particularly near Motia Talab where several private hospitals are located.Rain sparks power cuts in the cityIncessant rains in Bhopal caused power supply disruptions in the city, despite rigorous maintenance efforts by the discom. Around 500 feeders were maintained before the monsoon, reducing the time taken to address complaints and resume supplies. While there were nominal issues and short interruptions in power supply, some areas experienced delays and isolated pockets of tripping. The discom attributed these issues to heavy branches falling on wires due to the rain. Overall, more than 3000 complaints were addressed in a single day.Govt focus on strengthening power sectorThe state government of Vijayawada is taking steps to enhance the efficiency and meet the rising power demand in the sector. The special chief secretary for energy, K Vijayanand, expressed the governments determination to make power utilities the best in the country. Measures include improving internal efficiency and introducing advanced technologies in power generation, transmission, and distribution. The government aims to provide quality and cost-effective power to consumers and make the sector more people-friendly.
