Design tweak: Skywalk linking Sector 51 & 52 stations not so soon

NOIDA: The skywalk between the Sector 51 and 52 metro stations on the DMRCs Blue and NMRCs Aqua lines is set to miss its October deadline. With more than half of the work on the project, which started this March, yet to be complete, the project was unlikely to have met its deadline. The construction firm, M/S Iqbal Constructions Company, however, said the project had been delayed because of a change in the design from a one-column structure to two columns. They now hope the project would be ready by March next year.Nearly 45-50% of the civil works have been completed. The project was delayed due to technical reasons. The Authority officials will be able to comment on this, a project engineer said. The private company was awarded the civil works on January 9 this year and was scheduled for completion on October 5. The electrical works, with a budget of Rs 15.73 crore, have not started yet. Pankaj Garg, a junior engineer of Noida, said initially the skywalk project had a single-pillar design. As excavation started, we found the metro lines underground cable at the spot. It was not viable to remove the cables. Thus, the skywalks design was changed from one-column structure to two columns. The revised project was also vetted by IIT Delhi and it delayed the work. The L-shaped, 420 metres by 5 metres skywalk will have a travelator moving at 0.5 metres per second speed to facilitate a quick interchange between the two stations. Currently, people use a 300-m walkway or the e-rickshaw service lane for the interchange. The walkway was dismantled and e-rickshaw service suspended for building the skywalk connecting the stations. The e-rickshaw service was later restored.Gaurav Bansal, senior manager (electrical) of Noida Authority, said the travelator and other electrical equipment have been ordered and are in the process of manufacturing. Once the civil works is completed, it will take about one month to fit the electrical equipment.Sameer, a resident of Sector 140, said he frequently takes the metro to travel to Delhi. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the Sector 51 station to the Sector 52 station. Once the skywalk is developed, it will facilitate interchange, he said.We also published the following articles recentlyDelay in ETP work takes toll on Buddha Nullah projectEnvironmentalists and activists visited the under-construction effluent treatment plant in Ludhiana, where they were disappointed to find dairy waste flowing into Buddha Nullah and sewer lines.
