How to improve water supply? Residents give suggestions to Noida

  • | Saturday | 30th September, 2023

NOIDA: After days of erratic water supply in some sectors, the Confederation of NCR Residents Welfare Associations (CONRWA) has written to the Noida Authority CEO, Lokesh M, suggesting measures to address the issue. They suggested setting up water treatment plants at all underground reservoirs, tube wells and Ranney wells, which are largely used when supply from the upper Ganga Canal is disrupted twice a year. The president of CONRWA, PS Jain said that it has been 47 years since the inception of Noida and yet there is such a huge water issue in the city. The recent expansion of the city and commensurate rise in population can no longer thrive on old supply line infrastructure. Old pipelines especially in old sectors need to be changed and new ones need to be laid in new sectors, said Jain.BB Walecha co-convener of CONRWA further adds that the Authority has not been completely successful in supplying potable water. Neither has it taken any concrete action despite sufficient resources like Ranney and tube wells.According to CONRWA, the water sourced from Ranney and tube wells, especially during the upper Ganga Canal shutdown, needs water treatment plants of adequate levels. Such plants should be installed on all the underground reservoirs as well where tinted water is noted. This can be treated and supplied which will help reduce pressure on the Ganga water source especially when the Ganga water supply is shut down during the annual desilting exercise, said Walecha. The other suggestions made by the NCR RWA include rainwater harvesting pits to keep a check on the depleting groundwater of the city. As per authority sources, the groundwater in Noida has depleted 17 metres since 2016 when the level of groundwater was 9.9m.Apart from that, the residents body suggested that reservoirs and water tanks should be strictly cleaned every month as it would curtail soil and mud in the water supply.A list and roster of pipeline flushing points in the sectors should be prepared and that list should be given to the RWAs.The NCR body further called for a concrete policy about the supply of pure drinking water in the city which should be vetted by technical experts from IIT and demanded its immediate implementation. If necessary, we are ready to cooperate in all these measures with authority as required or desired, said Jain.A copy of the letter has also been sent to UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
