Man gets 10 yrs’ jail for ’12 bank heist

NOIDA: The additional sessions court in Gautam Budh Nagar on Friday sentenced a 55-year-old man to 10 years of imprisonment for robbing a bank in Surajpur in 2012. The court also pronounced Kamal guilty of attempted murder for firing at the police team.R S Bhati, additional district government counsel (ADGC), said the incident happened on October 16, 2012. At 7.45pm, Kamal, along with his four accomplices, Mangal Singh, Dharmendra, Sundar, and Kripal, reached the HDFC bank branch in Surajpur and held the security guard and four other employees hostage at gunpoint. They looted Rs 9.75 lakh, he added.A PCR van patrolling in the neighbourhood sensed foul play and called for additional manpower.A police team reached the spot, and seeing them, the five men fired at them and tried to escape. Subsequently, the cops chased them and arrested Kamal, while his accomplices escaped. The police recovered the stolen cash from him, said Bhati.Kamal and his accomplices were booked for dacoity with arms and criminal conspiracy. Kamal was also charged with attempted murder, rioting, and sections of the Arms Act. He was produced in a district court and sent to judicial custody. He has been in prison since his arrest.During trial, he admitted to his involvement in the dacoity and demanded lenient punishment. On Friday, after hearing arguments from the prosecution and the defence, additional sessions judge Mona Panwar convicted Kamal.From the evidence presented, Kamal has been found guilty of committing dacoity in the HDFC bank branch in Surajpur. The convict is sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 under sections 395 (dacoity), 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the IPC; and seven years of imprisonment and fined Rs 7,000 under IPC Section 412 (dishonestly receiving property stolen in the commission of a dacoity); and 10 years of imprisonment under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and fined Rs 10,000, the court said. In the case of the attempt to murder and the Arms Act, he was again sentenced to seven years of imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000.
