Slow wind pushes Noida air quality to ‘very poor’

NOIDA: Air quality of Noida and Greater Noida was recorded in the very poor category for three days in a row. On Wednesday, Noidas AQI was 312 and Greater Noidas 354, marginally better than Tuesdays 329 and 375, respectively. Ghaziabads air quality continued to remain in the poor category but improved slightly — 254 from 251 a day ago. The air quality is likely to be in very poor category on Thursday and Friday, it said.UPPCB regional officer Utsav Sharma, meanwhile, said an analysis of the October data for 2023 and 2022 showed the PM 2.5 and 10 concentrations and AQI for the month have marginally improved this year in Noida. The average PM 2.5 in October 2023 was 79 against last years 87 whereas the average PM 10 was recorded 221 this October against the previous years 225.The average air quality index of October, Sharma said, was recorded at 202 this year against 2022s 203.Between 2017 and 2023, the best air quality was recorded in 2021 when the PM 2.5 was recorded at 79, PM 10 was 207 and AQI 182 due to restrictions in the coronavirus period.A Noida official said the authority has pressed 14 teams to ensure compliance with GRAP measures. Twenty-six tankers sprinkle STP water on 80 km roads every day, while 12 mechanical machines sweep 340 km stretch in the city to check dust pollution, he said.
