`Red` flag: Over 600 heavy industrial polluters still here

NOIDA: Red, or heavily polluting, industrial units still operate in the vicinity of your home. More so in Ghaziabad, where UP Pollution Control Board findings released this June marked 426 industrial units as red. Noida has 84 such units and Greater Noida 110. Track the pollution level in your cityRed units account for the maximum amount of particulate matter emissions, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide released into the atmosphere.UPPCB officials said they keep polluting industries in check by issuing fines if violations are found, but all such units will have to be shifted away to clean up the airshed. In Ghaziabad, which is an old industrial hub, around 1,400 polluting industries have been shifted out of the citys municipal limits, an official in the district administration said on Wednesday. "Constant monitoring and inspections are carried to push the rest into switching to cleaner fuel," the official said.Noida Authority has stopped issuing permission for industries in the red category. Red industrial units are those like hazardous waste recyclers, manufacturers of oil, grease and petroleum-based products, lead acid battery makers, sugar, cement and fibre glass producers, among others.
