Wildlife crime control bureau to also probe snake venom case

Noida: The wildlife crime control bureau will also investigate the snake venom case, in which six persons, including YouTuber and reality TV star Elvish Yadav, have been booked. Five persons were arrested on Thursday night for allegedly supplying snake venomto make opioids at rave parties. Nine snakes, including five cobras and a python, and a vial with 20ml liquid – possibly venom – were recovered from them.Although Yadav is among six persons booked on a complaint by BJP MP Maneka Gandhis NGO, People for Animals, police said they were still investigating his role in the racket.On Saturday, office-bearers of the wildlife bureau held a meeting with police and forest department officials and said they had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and would launch an investigation. Police and the forest department are carrying out their own investigations. The vial with 20ml liquid, which is likely to be venom, is still in the possession of police. It has to be sent for investigation. Many others could be involved in the racket. The case needs to be thoroughly investigated, said Pramod Srivastav, the district forest officer.Some of those involved in the case could be influential names. That is why a joint investigation is all the more necessary, added Srivastav, who met the police commissioner on Sunday.As part of their investigation, Noida police have sent three teams to Mumbai, Gurgaon and Delhi. While Yadav is based in Gurgaon, he said he was shooting a music video the day the others were arrested.Yadav and a few of his friends were stopped in Kota on Saturday evening and were let off after a go-ahead from Noida cops, who said they were yet to establish his role. The seized venom is being tested for its psychotropic properties. However, no evidence has been found against him so far. Yadav was stopped at a checkpost in Kota but was allowed to leave after police confirmed that the charges against him had not been corroborated. Five teams are engaged in the investigation, and police are also scanning call records and social media posts for further information.
