Yamuna e-way accidents up 30% in 2023, but deaths down

NOIDA: Accidents on the Yamuna Expressway have seen a rise in the first 10 months of this year, but fatalities have come down.Data sourced from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) showed that while 262 accidents were reported on the speedway in 2022, the number increased to 341 – marking a 30% rise.Fatalities, however, saw a decline.While 91deaths were reported in accidents in 2022, 80 people died till October this year.Accidental injuries recorded a moderate increase. In 2022, there were 559 injuries reported on the expressway. In 2023, the number rose to 596, signifying a 7% increase.The Authoritys data revealed that the number of accidents, deaths and injuries on the expressway has been fluctuating since 2016.Accidents decreased steadily from 2016 to 2022, before rising again this year. The year 2022 reported 262 accidents, the lowest since 2016, when the expressway registered 1,025 crashes.The data showed a more fluctuating pattern as far as fatalities are concerned. While 2019 recorded the highest number of fatalities – with 178 lives lost –2023 showed the lowest, with 80 deaths. There were significant dips in deaths in 2018 (85) and 2020 (84), while spikes were reported in 2017 (120) and 2021 (116).Injuries, too, showed fluctuations during this period. The highest number of injuries occurred in 2016, with 1,255 cases, while the lowest was 559 last year.Officials said several road safety measures had been taken to reduce the number of fatal accidents.Arun Vir Singh, the Authority CEO, said Suraksha Group, the company managing the expressway, would take further measures to enhance road safety and ensure the number of accidents reduced.We have asked Suraksha to install 120 more cameras on the 165km long expressway by March next year. At present, there are 64 cameras, the CEO added.In the past one year, officials said, the concessionaire has taken several preventive measures to reduce accidents, based on a safety audit by IIT-Delhi.One of the major changes is the replacement of barbed wires on the median of the main carriageway with thrie beams, which help in preventing vehicles from crossing over to the other side after an accident. Thrie beams also reduce the impact of the accident on the vehicle and its occupants, Singh said.Currently, around 30,000-32,000 vehicles use the expressway daily. Reasons for the increase in fatalities include non-compliance with safety measures and issues with road engineering and signage. Authorities need to address these issues to reduce accidents.Bihar not among top 10 states registering highest number of road accidentsBihar did not feature in the top 10 states with the highest number of road accidents in 2022, according to data released by the Minister for Road Transport and Highways. However, Bihar ranked 10th in terms of road accidents on national highways during the same year. In terms of accident deaths, Bihar ranked seventh, with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar showing the highest growth in accident-related deaths compared to the previous year. Experts attribute the lower number of road accidents in Bihar to the total prohibition on liquor enforced by the state government in 2016.Delhi again tops in fatalities due to accidents, up 18%Delhi had the highest number of deaths due to accidents among cities with a population of over a million last year, according to a report by the Union road transport and highways ministry. The city reported 4,720 accidents in 2021, resulting in 1,461 deaths and 5,201 injuries. The main causes of accidents were road condition, human error (such as speeding and drunk driving), and vehicle condition. Experts called for fixing accountability and analyzing the causes of accidents to find effective solutions. There was also a correlation between the lack of visible and effective police presence and the rise in accidents.
