Gr Noida meth labs: Internal probe finds 17 cops negligent on duty

Noida: Seventeen policemen have been indicted of negligence in duty in connection with the meth laboratories busted in Greater Noida earlier this year. The labs had been operational in the city since 2019.The indicted cops include inspectors, sub-inspectors and constables deployed with the Beta 2 police station between 2019 and 2023 and beat officers deployed with the Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRRO) in the same period.Nearly 75kg of methamphetamine worth Rs 350 crore was confiscated in raids at two Greater Noida houses at Theta 2 and Mitra Enclave in Beta 2 on May 17 and May 30, respectively. Of the 13 arrested, 12 were Nigerian nationals, and one Senegalese. At the time, officials said after cooking meth in the labs, the gang would send batches of drugs to Delhi, either in their cars or through bike taxi service providers.Following the arrests, Noida police commissioner Laxmi Singh had ordered an internal inquiry into intelligence failure and alleged police negligence. Additional DCP (Noida) Shakti Avasthy conducted the inquiry that has indicted the 17 cops.The two meth labs had been operating in the city since 2019. The report submitted by Avasthy names at least 17 cops. We will initiate departmental action against them, said Singh. After being brought back to the police station, he shot himself while still inside the vehicle. The DIG has ordered a detailed probe into the incident.Pollution: Physical classes up to Class 9 suspended in schools across Noida, Greater NoidaThe district administration in Noida and Greater Noida has ordered the suspension of in-person classes for students up to class 9 until November 10 due to the worsening air quality. The decision is in line with the Graded Responses Action Plan Stage-IV, following the air quality index in Delhi-NCR reaching the severe category. All schools in Gautam Buddh Nagar district are instructed to switch to online classes during this period.
