GIMS to roll out 14 new post-grad courses

Noida: The Government Institution of Medical Science (GIMS) will begin offering post-graduation (PG) courses in doctor of medicine (MD) and master of surgery (MS) starting from the next academic year.There will be 14 areas specialities offered— medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, community medicine, anesthesia, ENT, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, anatomy, microbiology, and orthopedics — in which the MD and MS courses will be conducted.For all the PG courses, a total of 70 seats will be offered by the institution and 29 faculty members have been recruited. By the end of this year, teams from the National Medical Council (NMC) are expected to inspect to check "the faculty and infrastructural condition" for setting up the courses. In the last three years, the number of patients has increased four times. We need to focus on speciality areas in GIMS now, hence we are starting the PG courses. Through the NEET exam next year, we expect to take admission in the PG courses, Rakesh Gupta, director of GIMS, said. Gupta further added that the DNB (Diplomate National Board) programme, which is equivalent to a postgraduate or post-doctoral programme, will be stopped at GIMS from the next academic next year. Except for radiology, all other four courses of DNB will be stopped from next year, instead, the MD/MS courses will be started, said Gupta.Meanwhile, the construction work of the new nursing college of GIMS is expected to be started by December. Officials said that lectures will be conducted at the basement classes, till the new building near the GBU campus starts. Classes will be gradually shifted there once the building comes up. A fund of Rs 21 crore has been sanctioned for the same. Initially, there will be four classrooms, six laboratories, and other facilities at the nursing college, the director added. The colleges must first obtain approval from the Directorate of Higher Education, and then from their affiliated university before being able to launch the new courses and call for admissions. Government colleges are currently excluded from launching new courses.
