3 months on, GNIDA yet to launch work on sewer network despite NGT order

NOIDA: The Greater Noida Authority is yet to start work on developing a sewer network across 93 villages as ordered by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). It has also not started work on setting up a sewage treatment plant(STP) plant yet. Villagers alleged that much of the work remains on paper, while sewage from most villages is still being disposed into local ponds. On August 8 this year, the NGT ordered GNIDA to submit an action report ensuring that the treated sewage water is to be duly utilised for non-potable purposes. This move came after a Greater Noida resident, Pradeep Dahlia, had filed a petition in 2022 to the NGT alleging the discharge of sewage on open land, roads, internal lanes and stormwater drains in 93 villages of Greater Noida. The petitioner mentioned that the Authority has been cleaning the ponds but at the same time, dirty water is also collecting in these ponds. Sewage lines have not been functional in any village from Chipyana to Kasna near Gaur City to date. Most ponds are filled with sewer water. The Authority is to give a reply to NGT next year in January on the issue, said Dahlia. After the petition, NGT found that the existing sewage network for 80 villages is inadequate as there are only 16 faecal sludge receiving points. The NGT also directed a joint committee last year comprising the Central Pollution Control Board, state pollution control board, GNIDA, the GB Nagar district magistrate and the UP secretary of urban development for a joint report on the matter. On November 3, the NGT issued an order stating that if the report on this matter is not filed by the GNIDA in terms of the previous direction within six weeks, then the CEO of GNIDA will have to virtually present himself before the Tribunal on the next hearing. Despite multiple calls, GNIDA officials were not reachable for a response. We also published the following articles recentlyLack of protection works in Gangotri National Highway: NGT issues notices to authoritiesThe National Green Tribunal has issued notices to authorities, including the NHIDCL, regarding a lack of protection works on the Gangotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand.
