NOIDA: The forest department has removed hyacinths covering the water bodies at Surajpur wetland and created artificial islands by piling them on bamboo platforms to welcome winter migratory birds and encourage roosting. Before the migratory birds arrive, we conduct maintenance work to welcome the flocks and make them stay here longer. The most difficult task is to remove the hyacinth, which spreads across the lake by monsoon end to such an extent that one cannot even see the water. Its important as mostly water birds arrive here," said district forest officer Pramod Srivastava. "But the hyacinth mounds on bamboo platforms over the water bodies will provide a roosting ground for the birds."The migratory birds start arriving by October, and their strength peaks by December. Birders said greylag and bar-headed geese have landed in the wetland, while the sighting of a ruddy shelduck pair has been a highlight. We are also eagerly anticipating the arrival of some of the rare birds. Surajpur wetland holds promise this year due to the favourable water levels. We will also see waders like black-tailed godwit, black-winged stilt and sandpipers, which visit the wetland in substantial numbers, said Mukund Kumar, a Noida-based birder.Kumar said the wetland authority has taken substantial steps to enhance the bird habitat. The authorities have created hyacinth islands that will provide a safe roosting place for birds and make them feel secure and comfortable. We often see birds resting on these hyacinth mounds. This setup benefits the birds and offers bird enthusiasts a unique opportunity to observe and photograph avian behaviour closely, he said.We also published the following articles recentlyPersonality Test: Which bird represents You?
