‘Band, baja, baraat’ throws traffic into chaos, 7 booked

Noida: Barricades were put up at Gaur Chowk to stop a wedding procession, headed from Delhis Jamia Nagar to Greater Noida West, on Sunday night after a group of baraatis were spotted on the Intelligent Traffic Management System pulling off stunts on cars, blocking traffic near the Parthala flyover and using pressure horns.Cops bookedseven persons and impounded five SUVs on the spot for rash driving and traffic violations while allowing the grooms car to pass through.Five of the men were arrested but released on bail later, police said. Twelve other cars, which were also a part of the procession but managed to slip through, were issued challans amounting to nearly Rs 4 lakh, they added.The ITMS team alerted the traffic department after some people who were part of a wedding procession were seen creating a ruckus and disturbing the traffic movement around 9pm on Sunday, DCP (traffic) Anil Kumar Yadav said, adding they received complaints from a few commuters stuck on the road due to the baraat.According to Bisrakh SHO Arvind Kumar, 15-20 cars were part of the wedding procession of a businessman, who is yet to be identified. The convoy entered Noida from Kalindi Kunj and drove through Sector 37, City Centre and Parthala Flyover for Greater Noida West. The baraatis had stopped the cars near the Parthala bridge for celebration, some of them used pressure horns and zoomed past other vehicles on the busy stretch. A video of the procession, widely circulated on social media, showed a few men hanging their heads out of the car windows.Sub-inspector Sushil Kumar, who was a part of the police team that put barricades near Gaur Chowk to stop the revellers, said five SUVs — a Toyota Fortuner, a Hyundai Verna and three Kia Seltos — were stopped and seized. The grooms vehicle was allowed to pass through as it was not violating traffic rules. The traffic police scanned the CCTV footage and identified 12 other vehicles, which were also a part of the wedding procession but managed to slip through, were issued challans worth Rs 3.96 lakh, the SI, who filed a complaint in the case, said.The FIR was filed under IPC Sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 279 (rash driving), 339 (wrongful restraint) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) against five persons – Shoaib Malik, Shakib, Abid, Asif, Shoaib Ali – who were at the wheels of the seized SUVs, and two other drivers.
