Hit-&-run driver who left 2 dead arrested, tells police he dozed off

NOIDA: The car driver who ran over two people and injured six outside a factory in Sector 83 on Sunday was arrested and the SUV — with a Delhi registration number — seized, police said.The suspect, Piyush Kumar, is a freelance content writer and is a resident of a housing society in Sector 78. He fled to his hometown in Bihar after the accident. Cops arrested him from Sector 83 near the NSEZ metro station on Wednesday after the SUV was recovered from Biodiversity Park in Sector 91.The car, police said belongs to his friend.According to police, the eight men, in their twenties, were returning to their rented accommodations around 1am after finishing a shift at the factory, when the speeding car ploughed into them killing two and injuring six others.The SUV driver did not stop to check on the injured workers. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed near the spot. One of the workers, Mohammed Islam, died before reaching the hospital while another, Imamudin, succumbed during treatment at Delhis Safdarjung hospital, DCP (Central Noida) Suniti said. Two other workers, who sustained severe injuries, were also referred to Safdarjung for treatment.The SUV was identified from the CCTV footage and traced first. During probe, cops found that the car belonged to Kumars friend, who lives near Sector 112.The accused was on his way to leave the car at a friends house on Sunday when the incident occurred. He told interrogators that he fell asleep at the wheel and hit the workers who were walking on one side of the road, the DCP said.Kumar was arrested under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by an act that endangers life or safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
