In April this year, the UP government came out with a list of 64 gangsters who had invested in realty and decided to attach their properties. We have attached Brijnandans properties — two plots in Mathura district worth Rs 23 crore, added the police chief. The assets, she said, were seized under Section 14 (1) of the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, which allows attachment of illegal properties to effectively curb gangsters, mafias and criminals and their associates".Police claimed to have attached properties worth nearly Rs 130 crore since setting up the police commissionerate two years ago. More than half of that belongs to Sunder Bhati and five of his gang members, said cops. The seized properties would break the gangs financial backing and help cops make a strong case against them in court, according to the police chief. In most of the cases, the gangsters and their members are either in jail or have died. The action against their assets has been going on for some time. All their properties bought with illegal money should be confiscated, added Laxmi Singh.
