Extraction of groundwater: Builders, GNIDA served notices

GREATER NOIDA: NGT has said that notices should be issued to all builders in Bisrakh and government offices that extract groundwater illegally.It appears that no formal notice has been issued by the Tribunal to all the project proponents who may be affected by the ultimate order. Let notices be issued to all respondents, except those who are already represented, to enable them to file their response within two weeks from the date of receipt of the notice, said the tribunal.NGT was hearing a petition related to illegal groundwater extraction in Greater Noida (West), which is situated in the over-exploited Bisrakh block.The petition was filed by Prasoon Pant and Pradeep Dahalyia. In their original application, the petitioners alleged that 63 builder projects in Greater Noida (West) were illegally extracting groundwater. After the formation of the joint committee, it was found that 33 group housing projects were illegally extracting groundwater. As the matter was being heard, several private builders had filed interlocutory applications stating that they were not served proper notices and were not at fault for groundwater extraction. The NGT then issued notices to them on December 8, said Pant. The petition claims that the scarcity could affect the organization of the Kumbh Mela and the Magh Mela in the next two decades. The scarcity is attributed to the withdrawal of water by entities such as the Kishanpur canal and two thermal plants. Several authorities, including the Union Ministry, have been impleaded as respondents in the matter.Shopkeepers trick with Marathi signboards, Thane Municipal Corporation issue noticesTMC issued 253 notices to commercial establishments in Thane for not displaying Marathi signboards as per government rules. Notices were issued by different ward committees, with Uthalsar ward issuing the highest number at 104. Despite a Supreme Court order, many establishments are still not complying. Some are using small Marathi fonts while the English name is bigger. TMC officials are conducting regular checks and have appointed ward tax clerks to issue notices.
