Licenced weapons not seized ahead of panchayat elections

GREATER NOIDA: Even as the Dankaur has been declared as a sensitive area by the district administration ahead of nagar panchayat elections, that all the licenced weapons — including the one belonging to the kin of a local BJP candidate — have not been deposited, reveals a major lapse on part of police.Though the district police chief suspended a sub inspector, Pritam Singh of the Dankaur police station, on Tuesday, villagers pointed out that Deepak would often wield his weapon openly and had threatened to kill Sagar Sharma earlier too.

Abhimanyu Sharma, Sagar's brother said.Police admitted that while there are around 135 licenced weapon holders, 10 of them had been left without submission.Rumours abound that even liquor was distributed among villagers in the past week.As the issue started being politicised with the members of the local BSP, Congress and the BJP visiting the family, the kin refused to cremate the body for around three hours, keeping the body on the main market road among the relatives and other villagers till sub-divisional magistrate Sadar Anjani Kumar Singh pacified them.The SDM announced a cash assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased's family under the Sarvhitkari Bima Yojana which is meant usually given to farmers with income lower than Rs 75,000 per year and landless people.SP (rural) Suniti said while Manoj submitted his licenced revolver last Thursday, Deepak was yet to submit his weapon.
