Manaveli BJP MLA Embalam R Selvam elected unopposed as speaker of Puducherry Assembly

Selvam is the 21st Speaker of the Union Territory Legislative Assembly. Only Selvam`s nomination was received for the post of president till 12 noon yesterday.

Puducherry BJP MLA `Embalam` R Selvam was on Wednesday elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly here. As soon as the proceedings of the House began, the Pro-tem Speaker K. Lakshminarayanan announced the election of Selvam as Speaker of the House.

Selvam was elected to the House from Manaveli constituency and is one of the first MLAs. Selvam is the 21st Speaker of the Union Territory Legislative Assembly. Only Selvam`s nomination was received for the post of president till 12 noon yesterday. The deadline for filing nominations for the election of the Speaker was till 12 noon on Tuesday.

Selvam said that the members can come out with positive suggestions for the development of this Union Territory in general and their constituency in particular.

Embalam is the native place of Selvam hence he is called `Embalam` Selvam. AINRC and BJP are the two parties running a coalition government. AINRC leader N Rangasamy took oath as the chief minister on May 7. AINRC has 10 MLAs and BJP has six.

Three other members nominated by the Center are supporting the AINRC-led NDA.
