Pune: Officers from the economic offences wing of the Pune Police said developer D S Kulkarni’s remand in magisterial custody on medical grounds will result in a delay in the ongoing investigations.Police will not be able to cross-verify him and his wife in the cheating case to ascertain possible discrepancies in the statements they have recorded and the related developments. The prime question as to where the money has gone still remains unanswered, an EOW officer said.Kulkarni, who was remanded in police custody for a week by a city court on Saturday, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Sassoon General Hospital in the early hours of Sunday after he fell unconscious in the police lock up. Later in the day, he was shifted to a private hospital in Erandwane for treatment.Kulkarni, also known as DSK (68), had complained of breathing trouble before he slipping into unconsciousness after he fell on the lock-up floor, police said.Dean of Sassoon General Hospital and spine surgeon Ajay Chandanwale told TOI, "After he fell unconscious around 12.15am on Sunday, he was rushed here. His condition was critical and we put him on a ventilator. A few hours later he regained consciousness. We suspect that he suffers from poor blood supply to the back of his brain."Kulkarni's condition, medically termed as vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI), is a temporary set of symptoms due to decreased blood flow (ischemia) in the posterior circulation of the brain. "That is the provisional diagnosis. We are running a few tests," Chandanwale said.Later, a holiday court allowed his lawyer’s plea to shift DSK to a private hospital in Erandwane for better treatment. Police offered them meals at night but DSK refused to eat saying that it was not good for his health. He slept on an empty stomach and fell on the floor of the lock-up, police said.Assistant commissioner of police (EOW) Nilesh More said, “DSK recovered during the day long medical attention in the hospital but his lawyer pressed before the holiday court that DSK be shifted to the private hospital where better treatment was available. Special public prosecutor Pravin Chavan opposed the plea on our behalf and pointed out that the Sassoon Hospital had qualified and experienced doctors and apt facilities.”More said, “Following a hearing, the court ordered DSK’s remand in magisterial custody for seven days and directed that he shall produce himself before a medical board at Sassoon General Hospital on February 20 at 8am.”Earlier, police said that DSK complained to the lock-up guards that he was not feeling well and was having breathing problem soon after he fell on the floor. His wife continues to be lodged in the lock-up.A complaint against DSK was registered with the Shivajinagar police station in October 2017 stating that he and his company were not repaying the fixed deposit amount and the interest accumulated on it.The complaint opened the floodgates of similar matters and so far the police have received complaint applications from 4,099 persons.
