Pune: An office-bearer of a mathadi workers’ union had a close shave on Tuesday night as a bullet fired by a gang of eight missed him by a whisker at Bauddha Vasti in Paud village in Mulshi taluka, about 32km from here.On hearing the gunshot, some residents rushed to the house of the union office bearer, Dashrath Chavan, and caught an assailant. He was handed over to the police.On Wednesday, a Paud police team, led by sub-inspector Anirudhha Gije, arrested one more assailant. The police said the attack on Chavan was a fallout of clashes between two unions of mathadi workers active in Mulshi. An offence has been registered under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and other sections of the Indian Arms Act.Chavan is the executive president of a Mathadi worker union’s Mulshi taluka unit. He was standing outside his house around 9.30pm on Tuesday when the suspects reached the spot and created a ruckus. One of them pulled out a country-made pistol and fired at Chavan, who ducked on time and survived.“As the residents ran towards Chavan’s house, the suspects fled while firing in the air,” Gije said. The people managed to nab one of the suspects, Shrivardhan Tikone (22). They beat him up and handed him over to the police.Gije said the man who had shot at Chavan is on the run. “We will soon arrest him and the other attackers,” he said.
