Extremely heavy rain occurred at isolated places over Odisha, Kerala, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan and Goa.Mahabaleshwar recorded 300mm rainfall in the 24 hours from Sunday morning to Monday morning — the highest 24-hour rainfall in the hill station in the last four hours. Mahabaleshwar, along with Bhawanipatna in Odisha, was the wettest places in the country till Monday morning with the same amount of rain. Matheran received 260mm of rain and Mumbai 100mm during this period.In Pune, 40.3mm was the highest 24-hour rainfall for July this year and the second highest for the season since June 1. The highest was 64.7mm of rain on June 22.A K Srivastava, head of the climate monitoring and analysis group at India Meteorological Department , Pune, said a well-marked low pressure over north coastal Odisha and neighbourhood and the monsoon current coming in from the Arabian Sea are affecting entire Maharashtra.“As the system moves further, heavy rain at isolated places is also expected over Vidarbha after July 17. The intensity of rain may reduce slightly on July 18. But another system brewing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to push it up after July 19,” he told TOI.Another Met official said the monsoon trough was slightly south of its normal position. “Satellite images show the cloud bands are stretching right from the Bay of Bengal to central and peninsular India. There is a depression over the tropical Pacific as well. As a result, monsoon pulses are coming towards our region,” he said.
