6 districts cross JuneJuly quota with surplus rain

PUNE: This year, the monsoon has been bountiful for the state, so much so that districts like Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Nashik , Raigad and Satara, among others, have received more rainfall than what they normally get during June-July.Pune district normally receives about 469.8 mm rainfall in these two months, but it has already received 575.8 mm rain till July 18.Also, as many as six districts, including Pune, have reported 'large excess' rainfall till now (June 1 to July 18). ‘Large excess’ is when a district receives 60% or more of surplus rain during a period over the normal quota.From June 1 to July 18, Pune district’s normal rain quantum is 340.5, which means that the total rainfall it has received till that date is about 69% surplus.Other districts which received ‘large excess’ rainfall are Palghar, suburban Mumbai, Thane in Konkan, Akola, Nagpur and Washim in Vidarbha An India Meteorological Department (IMD) official told TOI that what played in favour of districts in the interiors of Maharashtra was low pressure system over Bay of Bengal, which triggered good rains in the interiors.“We had several heavy spells till now, which more than covered the normal rainfall quota for the two months for several districts,” said Meteorologist and All-India Internet Weather Radio Station founder J R Kulkarni.
