MUMBAI: Even as talks between the Congress and the NCP on seat-sharing formula for the Lok Sabha polls are on, state Congress president Ashok Chavan on Wednesday decided to undertake a review of all the 48 seats, sparking off speculation about the alliance."We have convened a three-day meeting to take stock of the political situation. We will review the strength of the Congress in all the 48 constituencies. This will help us during seat-sharing negotiations with the NCP," Chavan told TOI.Stating the seat-sharing formula would be finalized before November end, Chavan added though he would be reviewing the political situation it did not mean the alliance was under threat. "Our alliance with the NCP is on a firm footing. We will be contesting the Lok Sabha polls together. Our aim is to defeat the BJP," Chavan said.Chavan said since it was decided to contest the polls jointly, it was felt the party should seek the views of district-level leaders where seats will be shared."In principle, the seat-sharing formula has almost been finalized. A few seats are remaining, but there is no dispute,'' he said. However, a senior Congress leader said buoyed by the success in the Karnataka by-elections, the party will not hesitate to stake claim to more seats."We have asked for 26 seats, while NCP has asked for 24 seats in view of its enhanced strength across the state. There is dispute over Pune, Aurangabad, Yavatmal and Ahmednagar seats,'' he said.In the recent past, a series of meetings between both sides on the division of seats has remained inconclusive in view of the dispute over at least six seats. Leader of opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has staked claim to the Ahmednagar seat for his son Sujay, while NCP has refused to part with the seat. There's a tug of war over Pune, Aurangabad and Yavatmal seats too. "We expect the dispute will be resolved at the level of NCP president Sharad Pawar and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ," he said.A week ago, Pawar had stated negotiations were at the final stage."We have reached an agreement on contesting 40 seats together and discussion on the remaining eight seats is in progress," Pawar had said.
