Drive to clean up rivers

PUNE: Around 20 non-government organisations and individuals will come together in the city to celebrate the India River Day on November 28.As part of the initiative, clean-up activities, awareness campaigns and river walks will be organised from November 25.Organisations such as Vasundhara Swachchata Achiyan, Devrai Foundation, Jaladevta Seva Abhiyaan will participate in the events.The aim of ‘Vision 2020-Solid Waste Free Rivers’ is to promote pollution-free, water hyacinth-free rivers in the district by 2020.As part of the programme, participating organisations and individuals will work on stretches along Mula, Mutha, Pavana, Indrayani and Ramnadi rivers.The organisations will also work on stretches along Someshwarwadi, Alandi and Kavadipaat, among others.“This is the first time that all organisations doing groundwork regularly for years have come together,” said Shailaja Deshpande, founder and director of JeevitNadi Living River Foundation, while addressing a news conference here on Tuesday.The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will provide logistical support, masks, containers, gloves, staff as well as pickup trucks in all locations.
