PUNE: Skoda and Volkswagen (VW) Group India inaugurated a technology centre at their facility in Chakan on Saturday in their bid to embark on an “offensive strategy” in the country, which would be based on a dedicated platform for the domestic market.The companies said they aim to achieve a combined market share of about 5% (from under 2% now) by the year 2025.The technology centre will employ 250 engineers who would work just on India specific platforms. “Our position in India needs to be strengthened,” he said.The two companies aim to achieve about 95% localisation (from about 76% now) and also rationalize the cost of the spares to make the brands more appealing to the end-users. All of the company’s new cars beginning 2020, will be based on this new platform initially.Some of the changes that the new platform would usher in include more cabin space, higher emotional appeal in terms of design and better ground clearance.
