Pune: Civic body sets up cell to prevent accidents

PUNE: Mayor Mukta Tilak said on Monday that the civic body had set up a road safety cell.Speaking at the inauguration of the Road Safety Week, Tilak said the cell would tackle various issues related to road safety — potholes, road markings, signals, infrastructure and enforcement.“PMC and other stakeholders like Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited , regional transport office, Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited, NGOs, and police are a part of the cell,” Tilak told TOI.The panel met for the first time on January 15. “The next meeting has been scheduled for February 18. We will decide on a proper agenda. A high-power committee will be formed to coordinate various works. The NGOs will help in the implementation of the various plans,” Tilak said. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Tejaswi Satpute said the issues related to road safety and the role of various stakeholders in addressing those issues were discussed at the meeting, and added that the meetings would be a monthly affair.“The traffic police have been told to take strict action against vehicles riding on or parked on footpaths. We also have to ensure that pedestrian crossings at signals are being adhered to.
