Pune: The Pune railway station will become as an eco-smart station in the next three months and have proper waste management facilities, senior officials said.“The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued an order last month, and we need to comply with it. In the next 3 months, Pune station will have solid waste management facilities. Attention will be paid towards proper cleanliness of tracks,” Pune divisional railway manager Milind Deouskar told TOI.In the last week of January, the NGT had asked the railways to identify and develop 36 stations as eco-friendly facilities. NGT said that a list of these identified stations would be released within 2 weeks, adding that the ‘polluter pays’ principle may be invoked for compliance of Solid Waste And Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.“Close to 6 tonne solid waste is generated at the Pune station every day. Earlier, we had appointed a contractor for segregation of waste and its proper disposal in coordination with Pune Municipal Corporation,” another official said. The NGT has also asked the railways to ensure that water and energy audits are conducted at all stations within 3 months to reduce use of energy and water. The action plan to make the 36 stations eco smart should be prepared within a month and sent to the NGT. The NGT order regarding the action plan pertains to four aspects—solid waste management, littering of solid and wastes, defecation along rail tracks and removal of encroachments.“We have worked on many of these aspects. The problem of open defecation along the tracks persists in areas like Shivajinagar, Pimpri, Khadki, Chinchwad, Dapodi, Kasarwadi, Talegaon, Dehu Road, Saswad and Hadapsar. Because of this, maintenance and repairing of railway tracks becomes difficult. We have started imposing a fine of Rs500 for defecating in the open. Bottle crushing machines and dustbins have been installed at the railway station,” the official said.
