PUNE: Helmet saved the life of an elderly man, while his wife on the pillion was injured after a speeding car hit their scooter near the nullah garden on Salunke Vihar Road in Kondhwa on Sunday morning.The Kondhwa police booked car driver Gajendra Dattatraya Kale (30) from Parbhani for rash driving among other charges of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.Rajgopal Iyer (61), a resident of Kumar Palam, a gated housing society near the Somji bus stop, was wearing helmet and escaped with minor injuries on his hands, left leg and face.“We were on the way to the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) and I took the left turn from the NIBM Chowk and rode via the NIBM-Salunke Vihar link road. I then took the right turn from Borade Chowk towards Salunke Vihar Road,” Rajgopal said.As I reached near the nulah garden, a car came from the direction of Fakhri Hills, a housing society on Kondhwa road, and hit the scooter. The driver had lost control over the vehicle,” he said.“My scooter skidded on the road up to a distance of around 6ft. I fell and my forehead hit the road. Fortunately I was wearing a helmet. But my wife, Ashalata (55), suffered a fracture in her right leg, ” Iyer said.Ashalata is admitted to a private hospital with her fractured right leg. She is working as a senior store supervisor at AFMC and was not wearing helmet.Kondhwa police assistant sub-inspector Mohan Deshmukh said “The car owner had given the vehicle on a contractual basis to a private firm. The driver involved in the accident would pick up and drop IT employees on Salunke Vihar Road and in the Wanowrie area.”The police have seized the car and issued notice to Kale, asking him to join the probe process as he has been booked under bailable offences.
