Baner residents foil dognapping attempt

Residents Baner society kidnapping Anjali Apartments of aon Saturday night successfully thwarted an attemptedof two dogs from the society by unidentified men who had entered the premises in a white car.The stray dogs live nearin Baner Residency Society and are looked after by a family and a few other locals. The men were trying to take the collared dogs with them, the residents said.Residents first noticed unusual activity around 7.30 pm when two men arrived in a white car in the area. The men tried to befriend the dogs and lift them from the spot.Elaborating on the incident, Rohan Thorat, a resident of the society, said, “The men parked their car a few metres away from the spot where the dogs were sitting. They brought some bread and eggs to feed them. They camped in the area till 1 am. Then they moved their car. When we went on the road, they immediately fled from the spot.”The residents said both the men appeared to be well built and between the age group of 40 and 50 years. One was wearing a white shirt, while the other one was wearing orange.Thorat added, “While the dogs were eating the men kept looking around to watch if residents were seeing them or not. If anyone would pass from there or look at them, they would sneak back inside the car. They even touched the dogs and tried to get them close to the car. They made their first attempt at 7 pm and then later around 11pm.”Ganesh Rakhunde, another resident, said, “We suspect someone from the society must have called these men to lift the dogs. However, this cannot happen unless the men have done this in the past. With dognapping cases in the city, we did not want to let that happen to our dogs. They were planning to come again but fled after seeing us.”The area has several security cameras on which the white car was filmed while entering and leaving the society. The residents even noted the number of the car, which was found to be registered in the name of one Bhagwan Sakharam Shinde.Ratan Bhatia and his family who look after the dogs said, “We feed them regularly and also take care of them. Around 1 am, the dogs started barking loudly and I came out to check on them. I saw a car parked outside my bungalow. When they saw me, the two men started the car and left from the lane. I even noted down the number and kept a watch till 3 am.”Mirror had earlier reported on the rise in dognapping cases in the city in last three to four months where over 30 to 40 dogs have been lifted from Aundh, Baner, Pashan, Bavdhan, SB Road, Balewadi. In these cases too, the dognappers had fed the dogs and lifted them in a car.An FIR is already registered with the Chaturshringi police by residents of Aundh when two dogs were kidnapped from ITI Road on January 31. However, there has been no headway in the investigation.
