Heavy to very heavy rainfall alert in state for next 48 hours

RAIPUR: A heavy to very heavy rainfall alert has been issued in Chhattisgarh by the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD). Bastar in South Chhattisgarh, Pendra Road and Ambikapur have been receiving continuous rainfall for the last many days. According to weather experts, Central India expects 95% rainfall this monsoon. Brace yourselves for heavy showers, thunderstorms and lightning in the next 48 hours A circular issued by the IMD said, due to the low pressure building up in coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal and in north-western Bay of Bengal, a depression has formed on Saturday, which may lead to very heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh.Bastar division is already witnessing continuous rainfall for the last two days - leading to flooding in many areas. The situation has gone from bad to worse in Jagdalpur, where the railway tracks have submerged, affecting rail traffic in the region.The Bhubaneswar-Jagdalpur Hirakhand Express had to halted as the railway tracks could not be seen making it impossible for train to move ahead, said official.

Railway officials conducted a rescue operation to help passengers alight the train.Officials said that twenty railway sleepers had also washed away on Bhansi-Bacheli route because of which passenger and goods train on the route were cancelled.The rivers and rivulets in Sukma, Dantewada and Bijapur districts have swollen to dangerous levels leaving many villages stranded. The administration is making efforts to provide relief in such villages and has sounded an alert asking resident to not venture near rivers or water bodies in the coming days.The Shabri river is flooded and is reaching the danger level. The low-lying security camps were already waterlogged by Saturday. Traffic was also disrupted after Jhapra bridge was flooded and passengers travelling via road had to spend the night at the bus stand.Similarly, the Shankhini-Dankini river in Dantewada has flooded disconnecting nearby villages from the headquarters.
