RAIPUR: After its landslide victory, the newly elected Congress legislature party (CLP) is meeting tonight in the state capital to elect its new leader.All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed its veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge as its observer to be present at the meeting of newly elected 68 legislators. The meeting is expected to discuss the selection of the chief minister.State Congress president Bhupesh Baghel, leader of the opposition in the outgoing assembly T S Singhdeo, and Congress working committee member Tamradwaj Sahu are among the frontrunners for the post of the chief minister. AICC general secretary P L Punia, who planned and executed the Congress strategy to take on the mighty BJP in the elections, is also camping here in the state capital to oversee formation of Congress government after a span of 15 years.Congress party is likely to face a tough time in deciding its candidates for ministerial berths, limited to total 13, in view of a large number of senior leaders winning the assembly elections—that too with huge margin. However, Congress will be doing a balancing act keeping regional balance and accommodating legislators belonging to the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and the other backward classes, who have overwhelmingly voted for the Congress.
