Chhattisgarh election results 2018: BJP cast out of SC reserved area, wins only 2 of 10 seats

Satnam Sena had the tacit backing of the ruling BJP and its leaders had used helicopters to canvass support for its candiates. Many senior congress leaders lost the elections from the constituencies where Dalits have a strong presence during the last elections.However, the situation changed drastically this time when the Satnami community priests, led by Guru Baldas, joined the Congress ahead of the elections while other community leaders also pledged their support to the Congress. But, such manoeuvrings crumbled under a Congress wave and BJP turned out to be the loser.Giving a tough fight to BJP candidates, Congress contestants secured seven seats and Bahujan Samaj Party contestant Indu Banajre won one seat Pamgarh by 3061 votes.While BJP minister and sitting MLA from Navagarh (SC) seat lost to Gurudayal Singh Banjare of Congress by a margin of 33200 votes, Guru Rudra Kumar of Congress gave a sweeping margin of 57060 votes to Rajmahant Sanwla Dahre from BJP in Ahiwara seat.From Sarangarh Congress candidate Uttari Ganpat Jangde wrested seat from the BJP candidate by 52389 margin of votes while Kusum Lal and CP Rai of Congress successfully wrested the Saraipali and Bilaigarh seats from BSP’s Shyam Tondon BJP’s Shyam Tandi. Another Congress contestant Shiv Dehariya secured Aarang seat defeating BJPs Sanjay Didi by margin of 44823 votes.BJP candidates Krishnamurti Bandhi and Punnulal Mohile succeeded to secure only two out of ten seats in Masturi and Mungeli respectively.Scheduled castes make up roughly 12 per cent of the state's 2.5 crore population and a sizable number of them follow the Satnami sect.In the 2013 elections, BJP had managed to script its victory after “ Satnam sena”, a political outfit floated by the Dalit priests belonging to the Satnami community, had cut into the votes of Congress in the constituencies reserved for the scheduled castes and in many constituencies where Dalits have a strong presence.
