RAIPUR: A 27-year-old woman delivered a baby weighing 5.3kg through normal delivery in district hospital at Bilaspur on Saturday. The doctors of the district hospital claim that the baby boy is the state’s heaviest newborn through normal delivery. After the delivery, mother Hemlata Banjare and the baby are healthy. Hemlata is a farmer from village Chakarheda of Malhar region in Bilaspur and has three daughters. Her husband is a daily wage earner and helps her in farming.“A newborn normally weighs between 2.5 to 3.5kg, but this is rare. It’s the heaviest baby I have ever seen in my career. Normally, newborns with heavy weight are suspected to be diabetic, but the possibility of diabetes has been ruled out in this case,” said Dr Nilesh Thakur, district hospital’s gynaecologist. On the risks involved in delivering the baby, Dr Nilesh said: “We took the case for normal delivery because the woman already had three normal deliveries in past. Hence, her body condition allowed to go for delivering the baby normally. However, there was the risk of shoulder dystocia , in which baby’s shoulder stays back behind the mother’s pubic bone and results in pressure. But, Hemlata’s baby was delivered smoothly within one hour after labour pain.”Hemlata said during the period of pregnancy, did not abandon work and ate pomegranate right from the first month, besides regularly visiting doctor.
