Two docs held after five died in fire at Covid ward

RAIPUR: Two doctors were arrested on Tuesday, following death of five Covid patients after a major fire broke out at a Raipur hospital on April 17. Police said that during investigation they found several discrepancies related to fire safety at the hospital. The state government paid Rs 4 lakh relief compensation to the kin of the deceased.

RAIPUR: Two doctors were arrested on Tuesday, following death of five Covid patients after a major fire broke out at a Raipur hospital on April 17. Police said that during investigation they found several discrepancies related to fire safety at the hospital. The state government paid Rs 4 lakh relief compensation to the kin of the deceased.

The incident took place on April 17 in the Covid ward of a private hospital located at Pachpedi Naka in Raipur. Patients were rushed out and shifted to other hospitals while five of them couldn`t be carried outside and they died. One of them was charred to death while other four died due to suffocation. Patients` kin had levelled negligence on part of the hospital administration, following which, SSP and collector visited the spot and a probe was ordered.

According to police, two board members of the hospital—Dr Sachin Mal and DR Arvindo Roy were arrested on charges of alleged negligence leading to fire break out and consequently, death of five patients. Police were also searching two other board members Dr Sanjay Jadwani and Dr Vinod Lalwani in the case.

A case under Section 304 (A) of the IPC was lodged against four of them and two are yet to be arrested. A police officer further said that during the probe, it was found that neither the fire safety equipment were functioning properly nor there were adequate arrangements to deal with the emergency situations.

The reason of fire was stated to be short circuit and amid no immediate equipment to douse the fire, the situation got worse.The incident took place on April 17 in the Covid ward of a pvt hospital at Pachpedi Naka.
