The downpour left muddy playgrounds inundated water fountains in parks and water-filled containers like tanks coolers and flower pots providing ideal breeding grounds for these disease-carrying mosquitoes. The relentless rain over the past day in Bhilai Township has created fresh breeding zones for mosquitoes. In response to the emerging cases of dengue malaria and other waterborne diseases in the city the Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Health Department of SAIL-BSP in collaboration with the Durg District Malaria Department have devised a comprehensive plan to curb the spread of dengue during the rainy season. In a door-to-door campaign municipal staff is urging residents to eliminate excess water from potted plants change the water in flower vases daily and use mosquito nets or repellents at home. As part of fogging operations awareness posters and pamphlets about dengue prevention are being distributed along with bleaching powder and temefos bottles among city residents. Breeding checkers and surveyors are urging residents particularly in slum areas to use mosquito nets and seek medical attention if they experience fever. The civic authorities have imposed penalties on individuals who fail to clean water from coolers pots tires coconut shells or other containers inadvertently creating conducive breeding zones for mosquitoes.
