Maoist attack suspect dies in police custody

A suspect in a major Naxalite attack died a few hours after he was taken into custody in Chhattisgarhs Dantewada district. Podia Madvi (40) was arrested at 5 pm on Saturday for interrogation in connection with the Aranpur IED blast in April 2023 that killed 10 police personnel and a civilian driver, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai said. Suddenly, Madvi suffered fits. Police shifted him to the district hospital where he died around 0030 hrs on Sunday, the officer said. Prima facie, it seems he died due to the seizure, but the exact cause of the death will be known after the autopsy. An accidental death report has been registered and a probe is being conducted by a judicial magistrate into the incident. On April 26 last year, 10 police personnel and a driver were killed after Naxalites blew up a vehicle carrying security personnel in the district.
