Farmers hold demonstration, demand hike in paddy bonus

The farmers called it sheer insensitivity shown by the government towards the farmers. They complained that CM Raman Singh often spoke of initiating talks with farmers but never did so.Meanwhile, Ajit Jogi from Chhattisgarh Janata Congress (J) supported the protest and visited the spot of demonstration. Amidst tight security and heavy deployment of forces, nearly 300 farmers were arrested at Rajim, Durg, Bilaspur and Rajnandgaon and were later released.No untoward incident was reported during the demonstration at Raipur and no arrests have been made. There was heavy traffic congestion on both sides of Serikhedi road when farmers blocked the road for three hours while many farmers who were on way to Serikhdi from Aarang, Dharsiwa and neighbouring areas, were stranded on the way due to blockade and weren't allowed to take part in protest. Along with various demands, farmers were also miffed with the fact that the ministers as well as the CM were on a tour of other states during the agitation, whereas they should have been present during the demonstration, answering questions since the date for the demonstration had been declared long back.

RAIPUR: Farmers from all across the state staged a state-wide demonstration on Friday by creating road blockades at 30 locations, demanding hike in paddy bonus by the government, and for decisions to be made in regard to minimum support price and farm loan.The demonstration, which continued from 12 pm to 3 pm, had farmers from about 31 farmer association bodies under the banner of Chhattisgarh Kisan Majdoor Sangh (CKMS) blocking national highways at 25 districts in the state, shouting out slogans with demands as well as support towards the ongoing farmer agitation at Madhya Pradesh . The areas of protest had to be put under tight police security to prevent any untoward incident.Dr Sanket Thakur , convener member of CKMS informed that the farmer protests were held at Serikhedi in the state capital as well as Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur, Rajim, Raigarh, Jagdalpur, Janjgir, Korba, Balod and Bemetara.
