Chhattisgarh farmer commits suicide

RAIPUR: A farmer in Chhattisgarh 's Mahasamund district hanged himself to death on Thursday morning allegedly due to burden of loan.The tribal farmer, Manthir Singh Dhruv, ended his life by hanging himself at his home.Mahasamund SP Neha Champawat said, "Based on statement of farmer's son, he was disappointed over the recently set up bore at his fields which didn't work. And there wasn't sufficient crop production, which subsequently caused crop loss and he committed suicide. While the investigation is underway and as the family is grieving, police would steadily progress the interrogation. As per preliminary reports, it seems, he committed suicide due to suffering loss."Champawat said that it isn't yet clear if he had taken loan and the exact reason would surface later. Police have informed the revenue department to inquire if he had taken loan under any agriculture scheme.Meanwhile, Sanket Thakur of Chhattisgarh Kisan Majdur Sangh who visited the farmer's house and attended his funeral said that Dhruv had taken loan of Rs 10 lakh from bank and financers for crop cultivation and a tractor.Thakur said, "Dhruv had taken loan of Rs 3.6 lakh from Sehkari bank but he failed to pay Rs 2.5 due to which he was declared defaulter by the bank. He had a land of 14 acres of which 7.5 acres was used to summer cultivation, but the newly installed bore didn't work as the water had dried up. The region has recorded scarcity of rain in past two years which has caused damage and loss of crop to him."Thakur added that when they spoke to the family, farmer's son said that Dhruv was quite upset with the loss and loan and was under pressure on how he would pay off the loans.Thakur along with other members of the association including Prabhakar Gwal and Dwarika Sahu demanded that state government pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to the farmer's family else, they wll stage protest.
