Rains pound Bhavnagar, Jesar lashed by 231mm

The deceased, identified as Tapji Solanki (55), had come in contact with an electric pole wet with rain water. In Sendarada village of Jesar taluka in Bhavnagar district, six persons were rescued after two houses collapsed on them. However, one person remained trapped inside the rubble of one of the houses.Jesar received maximum 231 mm rainfall in the state on Sunday.Two villages in Manavadar taluka of Junagadh district virtually turned into islands after flood waters inundated them on Sunday. The flood was caused by the opening of 18 gates of Ojat-2 dam in Badalpur village in Vanthli taluka. “Water at the speed of 65,000 cusec per second was released from the dam, which increased the water level in Ojat river, causing floods. Matiyala and Padardi villages were marooned due to flood waters,” said an official from Jungadh flood control room.The connection with Sukhpur village of Vanthali taluka were snapped completely after the bridge over Ojat river collapsed due to flooding. Farmers of Balagam and Bamanasa villages of Keshod taluka suffered heavy losses after flood waters washed away their farms,” said the official. In Gir Somnath district, Machhundri dam started overflowing on Sunday.Meanwhile in Ghogha town near Bhavnagar, seawater flowing in at high tide and rainwater mixed with each other and inundated the town. In Bhavnagar town, people had to wade through knee-deep water.Surat recorded 86mm of rainfall until 6pm, Manohar Patil, 26, was struck dead by lightning in Limbayat on Sunday. Patil was in the bathroom on first floor of his house when lightning struck the building, killing him on the spot.Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials thus shifted 150 people from Nehru Nagar in Umrawada after water from Meethi Khadi entered the area.
