Rain abates but thousands stranded

Rajkot: Even as the week-long incessant downpour abated in coastal districts of Saurashtra, situation remained grim in many parts as three people died while a number of inundated villages remained cut-off on Tuesday.There was some relief from rain in worst-hit Gir-Somnath, Bhavnagar and Amreli districts but Rajkot city and district, Jamnagar and Junagadh were pounded by torrential rainfall that affected normal life.Around 17 villages of Sutrapada taluka of Gir-Somnath district remained cut off while Vasoj village of Una taluka virtually turned into an island with nearly 4,000 residents trapped. In Upleta, a 45-year-old housewife Jyotsna Zalavadia was electrocuted when she accidentally came in contact with a iron road that was touching an electricity wire.Following continuous downpour, 80 residents of Vasavad village of Gondal taluka were shifted to a school as water level in Vasavadi river rose dangerously.The Gondal-Bagasara road which further leads to Diu remained closed due to massive potholes on the causeway.Officials said that at least 3,500 people across the rain-hit districts in the state were moved to safer locations.In Vadodara district, seven-year-old Sandeep Rathod was swept away in the turbulent Mini river that he tried to cross on way back home from the school near Angadh village on Monday.
