Dalit attempts suicide in Kutch collector’s office

Rajkot: A 45-year-old Dalit man attempted suicide at the Kutch collectorate in Bhuj on Monday morning, by consuming toilet-cleaning powder. “Jhola was told about this through official letters and was even made to understand this in person. However, he continued with his agitation,” Mohan stated in the release. Police said the victim, Velji Jhola, a resident of Nani Khakhar village of Mandvi taluka in Kutch district, had been staging protests at the collectorate for the last three months.According to police, Jhola had been demanding allocation of farmland meant to be alloted to Dalits at his village in accordance with a government scheme. However, as the administration failed to fulfil his demand, on Monday morning, he went to meet the collector while carrying a pouch of toilet-cleaning powder and consumed it in front of her.“Guards at the collectorate immediately rushed Jhola to GK General Hospital, where he is said to be out of danger,” said P H Patel, a sub-inspector at Bhuj A-Division police station.Kutch district collector Remya Mohan issued a press release stating that the piece of land Jhola had been demanding had already been allocated as ‘gauchar’ (pastoral) land in Nani Khakhar village.
