NHRC seeks government report on drunk doctor performing C-section

Police had arrested accused doctor Paresh Lakhani under charges of prohibition.In a statement, NHRC said, ““The commission has observed that the incident, if true, amounts to gross violation of human rights of the victims. We are preparing the report as asked by NHRC.” NHRC further stated: “The commission has also observed that doctors are always expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and devotion to duty but in the instant case, it appears that the concerned doctor had shown carelessness and criminal negligence by performing a C-section of a woman in an inebriated condition.” RAJKOT: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken a suo motu cognizance of November 26 incident in Botad where a doctor had allegedly performed a C-section of a woman despite being under the influence of alcohol.While the newborn child died immediately after the delivery, the woman succumbed to heavy bleeding some hours later. Accordingly, we have issued notices to the chief secretary and director general of police and Government of Gujarat calling for a detailed report in the matter as well as the status of the criminal case registered against the concerned doctor within four weeksBotad police is waiting for the probe report from Bhavnagar Civil Hospital to book Dr Lakhani for criminal negligence.When contacted, Botad superintendent of police Harshad Mehta told TOI: “We are awaiting for the report of Bhavnagar hospital add the charges of criminal negligence against the accused doctor.
