Racket selling snake venom busted, four held

PALANPUR: A multi-state gang selling snake venom was busted from Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district by the forest officials.Acting on specific information, forest officials on direction of deputy conservator of forests Shobhita Agrawal conducted searches and arrested two persons with four bags containing two live spectacled cobra and a dead Russell’s viper. Later two more persons were arrested for being involved in the racket “We seized two live spectacled cobra and a dead Russell’s viper and unearthed a racket operating in and around Sabarkatha district,” said assistant conservator of forest (ACF) Yogesh Desai.“Thought the racket was busted on Monday, it may have its links in the other states. “It was apparently violation of Wild Life Protection Act 1972 as the cobra and Russell’s viper come under schedule 2 of the act,” said Desai.According forest officers, the the accused confessed that the venom was to be sold to some Mumbai based party at high price. So we disclosed the matter on Wednesday (after due investigation),” he said, declining to disclose names of the accused.The forest officials said that they first nabbed two persons who were travelling in the car and on checking they recovered four bags, of which there were snakes in three bags, while one was empty.
