1,000 sanitary workers remain absent from duty

Rajkot: Nearly 1 ,000 out of total 2,270 full-time sanitary workers of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) remained absent from the duty on Friday demanding that the civic body starts recruitment and stops hiring workers on contract basis. However, RMC did not take this action kindly and announced that any worker remaining absent for consecutive three days from work without approval would be suspended.There are 4,500 workers on a contract basis in RMC. The workers went with a bottle of blood to municipal commissioner’s office on Thursday alleging that RMC was exploiting them.Municipal commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said, “We have not frozen the recruitments. Thosw who have joined the strike and remained absent continuously will be blacklisted in a manner that their heirs also don’t get job.” RMC said the no work was affected due to the strike and contractual workers are doing overtime to keep the city clean.
